DREAM STUFF DAVID MALOUF PDF

Reviewed by Malcolm Walker. Drawing the reader into the multifarious world of the characters, these stories leave the reader with a feeling these people have populated their dreams long ago but were somehow forgotten or overlooked, only to be found again amongst the pages of this wonderful anthology. Malouf is a writer of masterful intent, one of our best; one of those exact, estimably succinct writers, who, without using a single metaphor or simile, manage to conjure plausible worlds with a warmth that belies their precision. Each story measures its length to the last comma, and Malouf, rarely outstaying his welcome, manages to turn material that, in the hands of a lesser writer, could have been annoyingly banal or whimsical, into something quietly profound. Lattimer, however, lives amongst other dreams and nightmares.

Having no necessary cause, it would also have no limit. Lattimer is a man at war with himself. They had made him what he was. But he did want to know why the world he had grown up in had been so harsh and uncompromising, and had made so little room for love. The love that occurs in these stories speaks of those bonds and disconcerting alliances that were made when we were young, and which we seem to have grown out of or severed, but which come back to haunt us in times of conflict or upheaval.

Crisis, in one shape or form, has long been viewed by writers and critics alike as the generating engine behind the short story. Malouf understands the crises that infect the lives of very ordinary people. Malouf is no less certain with his female characters. It is a kind of formal trench warfare, that peculiar form of family conflict that stems from religious bigotry and hypocrisy.

Their life is not as they would like it. There is a chasm between their dreams and those of the real world, one that they need to bridge if they are to step beyond what they are or were, into what they can become.

In writing this way, Malouf somehow manages to confer both the broader and the more particular truths within all our lives.

Jonathan Cape, Random House February pages ISBN: reviewed by Ann Skea It was another world up there, a place so hidden and old, so deeply mythologized by the games they played in the twists and turns of its branches, their invented world of tribes and wars and castles, that the moment you hauled yourself up into its big-leafed light and shade you shook loose of the actual, were freed of the ground rules and the habits of a life lived on floorboards and in room. This could almost be a metaphor for this book, this tangled world of yellow flowering native hibiscus into which the boy, Jack, climbs to escape from reality. Malouf, an Australian poet who has just been awarded the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, came late to prose writing. It took him a long time, he said in a recent BBC interview, to discover how to make voices work in prose.

So I was very much looking forward to this collection. It started well, with solid stories of times long past, acrid I really admire David Malouf. It started well, with solid stories of times long past, acrid disappointments, the sudden violence that can destroy a life, confusions and reminiscences. But about half-way through, I became bored. I no longer cared about the characters whose lives were dissected across the pages. And the family birthday celebrations of the long, final story, "Great Day", left me cold; missing any real Australianisms, it could have been anywhere, and peopled by its inane characters, with their petty worries and blithe wanderings, it took me several days to finish, and I started to wonder why I liked this writer in the first place. Malouf writes gorgeously ornate sentences that, nevertheless, never feel like overkill.
